Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian in the presence of UN Coordinator in Armenia, the UNDP Permanent Representative Bradley Busetto, Head of the Yazidi Community in Armenia Aziz Tamoyan and Religious Leader of Yazidis in Armenia Sheik Bro Khasani, handed over an aviso on $100,000 aid to Iraqi Yazidis to Christoph Bierwirth, the Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Armenia.
According to the Armenian Foreign Ministry press-service, Minister Nalbandian said the world community has been closely following the tragic events in Iraq, where Islamic militants launched large-scale killings representatives of religious and national minorities. The minister said that thousands of Yazidis, Christian and Muslims have been either displaced or massacred over the last weeks.
Earlier on 15 August, Armenia's Foreign Ministry reported the Government would send humanitarian aid in the amount of $50,000 to the Iraqi Yazidis that fled their homes to avoid extermination by ISIS militants. Later, on 18 August, Arman Saghatelyan, Spokesperson of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said the president charged diplomatic missions abroad to redouble efforts towards settlement of the given problem. The president and prime minister decided to increase the envisaged humanitarian aid to the Iraqi Yazidis to $100,000.
