The CIS has been gradually turning into a sleeping beauty. Such projects like the Customs Union, Eurasian Union, CSTO and others are becoming the priority. And the Ukrainian-Russian crisis that rose because of confrontation around the Crimea, will deepen this tendency, Ukrainian political expert, Aleksey Poltorakov, told ArmInfo correspondent.
"The official position of Ukraine is that Ukraine is not a member of the CIS, but takes part in it. Ukraine has never been an active key actor in the CIS, as it was watching the CIS as a "presidents-premiers-ministers' club", - he said.
In general, geo-strategy of balancing between the West and East or Russia-CIS and Europe-USA has always been traditional for Ukraine since 1991. But in autumn 2013 (the beginning of Euromaidan) the external pressure upon Ukraine grew and gained new strongly pronounced forms. These tendencies have already resulted in clench in the confrontation between the West and Russia, which has negatively affected foreign political agenda of Ukraine and worsened the domestic economic crisis in the country.
