The opposition front opposing the Constitutional amendments has not made any substantial argument against the amendments since the campaign started, says Levon Martirosyan, a member of the Republican part of Armenia faction in the parliament.
"The suggested amendments are a priori inadmissible as they have been initiated by the ruling party and the president - here is the major argument the 'No' Front brings against the amendments," Maritrosyan said. The forces that now oppose the parliamentary system of government, once advocated for, he said. Political analyst Stepan Safaryan, in turn, said the opposition is against stable majority in the parliament, dependent judiciary and regress in human rights protection. It is not against the suggested system of government.
At the same time, Safaryan said the effective Constitution is not perfect as it does not determine exactly the responsibilities of the power branches. "Anyway, I will vote against the suggested Constitution as I don't care who will be adopting decisions in the country - either Baghramyan 26 (president's residence) or Melik-Adamyan (government's location)," Safaryan said.
The Constitutional referendum is scheduled for December 6.
