Vorotan Cascade of HPPs must remain under management of the government, says Vazgen Safaryan, Head of the Union of Local Producers.
Talking to reporters on 20 August, Safaryan said the electric power generated at the Cascade is the cheapest in the country. He calls it inadmissible selling as enterprise that is functioning so efficiently. In addition, he said, the sale of the Cascade will lead to price hike in the field. Safaryan said the Union is not against possible investors, but against the idea of selling the cascade.
On 27 November, the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) adopted a decision to allow selling the main property of the state CJSC "Vorotan chain of HPPs" to the CJSC Contour Global.
The following three plants, that enter "Vorotan chain of HPPs, will be sold: Spandaryan power plant, built in 1989 with a capacity 76 MW; Shamb power plant, built in 1979 with a capacity 171 MW and Tatev power plant built in 1970 with a capacity 157,2 MW.
Vorotan Cascade of HPPs consists of three hydro-power plants with a total capacity of 404MW. The Cascade generates 1.16 bln kWh electric power annually.
