Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran's nuclear program - it was achieved by 6 superpowers and Iran in Lausanne, Switzerland, on April 2 - was the first step towards final agreement. The statement came from Steven Blockmans, the head of the 'EU foreign policy' and 'politics and institutions' units of CEPS (Center of European Policy Studies), in an online press conference in response to ArmInfo's question.
Iran and six major powers announced Thursday they have reached agreement on the "key parameters" for a deal and would produce a final agreement, complete with technical annexes, by June 30. Iran will reduce its centrifuges by two- thirds, down from approximately 19,000 today to 6,104 of its first-generation centrifuges, while not enriching Uranium above 3.67 per cent for 15 years. The agreement envisages strong constraints and controls on Iran for up to 25 years in exchange for lifting of sanctions.
"However, it does not guarantee that P5+1 and Iran will achieve a final agreement," he said. The diplomat believes that if sober minds prevail over others and a political solution is found on the nuclear program of Iran, it may lead to normalization of relations between the civilizations.
He is sure that if sanctions against Iran are lifted, the country will play an important political role in the region and establish new commercial ties with neighbors and the EU countries. Blockmans believes the EU countries, all without exception, will welcome this process and try to benefit from it. The online interview was organized as part of the Region Research Center's project "Topical Dialogues for Armenia Media."
