Tension on the border with Azerbaijan becomes an obstacle for WWF- Armenia activity.
As it was informed earlier, several species of leopards have settled in the south of Armenia. WWF trail cameras installed in the borderline area help to trail the life of leopards. In March of the current year 8 cameras were located but recently at a result of the tension on the Azerbaijani border WWF Armenia staff cannot approach the territory.
Director of WWF-Armenia Karen Manvelyan noted that they tried to solve the problem with the help of WWF Baku office but this issue is beyond their competence. Manvelyan said they want to turn to OSCE as the Red Cross may help them.
Meanwhile, WWF-Armenia receives the information about the red listed leopards from its Iranian and Azerbaijani colleagues. According to the data by May of the current year, 5 leopards have been noticed n Armenia. This specie is registered in the Red Book and the Red List of IUCN.
In 2014 a leopard family in the south of Armenia gave birth to cubs.
The experts say that the number of the leopards increases due to the creation of a number of protected natural areas.
