During the 28th session, that took
place on March 27 in Geneva, the UN Council on Human Rights adopted Armenia's
resolution on prevention of genocide. The Armenian MFA press-office reports
that 64 states joined Armenia to cosmos the resolution. The resolution
reconfirms that untrammeled genocides and crimes against humanity encourage the
recidivism of such, it also hinders the establishment of international peace,
safety and security.  

 

The Armenian resolution particularly states that the
negation of the genocide and attempts at whitewashing the crime jeopardize the
struggle with impunity and thwart the efforts made to prevent genocide. 

 

Taking into account growing number of human rights
violations, the resolution calls upon the UN member-states to strengthen the
cooperation in order to prevent from committing new genocides. The document
emphasizes the importance of education on genocide prevention. 

 

With this respect, the resolution is urging the UN
member-states to elaborate appropriate educational programmes to raise
awareness on genocides thereby contributing to the prevention of latter. By
adopting the resolution the UN Council on Human Rights suggests that the UN set
December 9 as the day of a convention on preventing genocides and commemorating
genocide victims.

 

The resolution also provides for the establishment of
an international network on coordinating genocide prevention issues. It is
notable, that Armenia's resolution has been adopted on the threshold of the
Armenian Genocide centennial.
