An international court verdict on the Armenian massacres in Sumgait may pave the way for a Nagorno-Karabakh settlement, the co-author of the Sumgait: Genocide: Openness? Book Hrayr Ulubabyan told journalists on Wednesday.
He said that the massacres will remain unrecognized until Armenia appeals to an international court. "The Armenian authorities did it in 1988 right after the tragedy but received no answer and put the problem aside for some unknown reasons. Meanwhile, it was an organized crime committed by the Azerbaijani authorities for as long as four days in Feb 1988. The Azeris fired Armenians so they stayed at home so they could kill them there. They killed as many as 100 Armenians as a result. It was a real genocide and they in Moscow were certainly aware of it," Ulubabyan said, urging the Armenian authorities to be more active in informing the world community about this tragedy.
