There are no obstacles to Armenia's accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), says parliamentarian Hayk Babukhanyan. Commenting on the latest statement by PM Hovik Abrahamyan to ArmInfo, Babukhanyan said: "The prime minister is sure more informed on the procedural requirements of the road map on Armenia's accession to the Customs Union. If Abrahamyan says that Armenia will join the Union sooner or later, it means that there are no obstacles to it."
Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan told reporters, Thursday, that final date of Armenia's accession to the Eurasian Union may be changed. "Anyway, Armenia will join the Eurasian Economic Union, but some changes are possible in the time schedule. Accession to the EAEU is a process that needs to be thoroughly discussed," the prime minister said. Many political observers explain the protraction of the country's accession to the Union with Azerbaijan's stance on it.
Asked about the Azerbaijani factor, Babukhanyan said that Baku is in certain hysteria over Yerevan's future involvement in Eurasian projects, as it will strengthen Armenia's positions in the region, in the fields of economy, foreign policy and defense. "This once again proves that we have chosen the right way," he said.
As regards the statement by First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Igor Shuvalov, who declared in Sochi on 23 June that Armenia's accession to the EAEU would require negotiations with the WTO for compensation in favor of the partner-countries of the Organization, Babukhanyan said Yerevan is to fulfill its commitments to the WTO.
"Our country is entering a new, very complex and multi-functional system. There are commitments to other partners. All this requires a comprehensive study and fulfillment. Maybe, someone in the world would not like our policy, maybe someone had other plans and expectations. Nevertheless, I think, Armenia will not face any serious problems in any field. We explained everything to everyone. We do not seek enmity with anyone on our way to the EAEU," he said.
