After Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan's sudden decision to align with the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union, the European Union and Armenia have embarked on elaboration of the failed Association Agreement. The statement came from Steven Blockmans, the head of the 'EU foreign policy' and 'politics and institutions' units of CEPS (Center of European Policy Studies), in an online press conference in response to ArmInfo's question.
"It is hard to say whether they will manage to save that agreement instead of replacing the outdated agreement of partnership and cooperation. For the time being, the liberalization of the visa regime and an agreement in the field of civil aviation 'Horizon 2020' are Armenia's only expectations from the EaP Summit in Riga on May 21-22," the diplomat said.
He said the EU-Armenia Cooperation Council still operates and serves as a peculiar platform for high-level negotiations of Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and EU High Representative/Vice- President Federica Mogherini and European Commissioner Johanness Hahn. Armenia also continues to participate at the EaP multi-profile institutions at the highest political level, Blockmans said.
The online interview was organized as part of the Region Research Center's project "Topical Dialogues for Armenia Media."
