Reports that Turkey will open the border with Armenia in September this year are baseless, the Turkish Foreign Ministry told APA's correspondent in the country.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry said it will release an official statement in this regard.
Turkey's "Taraf" newspaper has reported that preparations to open Alijan checkpoint on the border with Armenia in September are underway.According to the newspaper, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had given official instructions to get through with preparations to open Alijan checkpoint. By opening Alijan checkpoint, Turkey is aiming to normalize its relations with the U.S. and Armenia. Following his condolences to Armenians over 1915's events in April, this is now the second step taken by PM Erdogan to normalize its relations with Armenia. The purpose of opening the border is to reduce pressures on Turkey to have it recognized the so-called Armenian genocide on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of 1915's events.
