Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Arman Navasardyan believes Iran's willingness to mediate the Karabakh peace process carries threats for Armenia.
Talking to reporters today, on February 1, the diplomat recalled that even the deputy foreign minister of Iran has said that Tehran is ready to mediate the peace process.
"Although it is not a new statement, but in the light of the current geopolitical situation, it is rather interesting. For the Armenian side, this proposal has more cons rather than pros, despite the views that Iran will help resolve the conflict in favor of Armenia," Navasardyan said.
The diplomat is concerned over the fact that Iran has not yet specified within which format it weighs its involvement in the process. Meantime, he said, Armenia has repeatedly stressed the need of resolving the conflict within the OSCE Minsk Group only.
"It appears that Tehran seeks to involve in the peace process beyond the OSCE MG, which already poses threats to Armenia, including escalation of the conflict," Ambassador Navasardyan said. In this light, he said, Yerevan has not responded to the statement yet, which he thinks is right and logical, as it is necessary to go into details of such proposal.
As regards the lifting of the West's sanctions against Iran, Navasardyan said this will open new opportunities to Armenia and the country must take that chance. -
