ARMENIAN AND GEORGIAN FOREIGN MINISTERS MEET IN YEREVAN
YEREVAN, JANUARY 16. ARMINFO. Armenian-Georgian relations and
cooperation develops in a normal course, Armenian Foreign Minister
Vardan Oskanyan said at a press conference after his meeting with
Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili in Yerevan, Monday, on
January 16.
Minister Oskanyan said the issues on the agenda of the bilateral
relations were discussed in details. Vardan Oskanyan said that he
had informed Gela Bezhuashvili of the Karabakh conflict settlement
process, the positive tends and some bases for optimism. The minister
said these discussion will be continued after the meeting with
Azerbaijani foreign minister in London on 18 January and the meeting
of Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders in February.
In his turn, Gela Bezhushvili touched upon the settlement of
Abkhazian and South-Ossetic conflicts. In the context of Abkhazian
conflict, the ministers expressed some optimism about opening of the
railway. The sides also discussed the European direction of their
countries' foreign policy. "I think that Armenia and Georgia have
some common interests in this direction regarding both the EU and
NATO," Minister Oskanyan said. He noted that an agreement was
reached to continue and deepen the consultations in this direction.
Besides, the relations with Russia and Turkey and issues of mutual
interest were discussed, including the bilateral cooperation in the
military, economic, energy, transport, spheres and internal affairs.
In particular, the minister singled out Armenia's "penetration" into
Georgia in the aspect of tourism and business, which is worth
promotion. Besides, delimitation of borders is also on the agenda of
the two countries. In this connection he pointed out the formation of
a relevant commission. He stressed the necessity for settling the
issue within the shortest period of time. Minister Oskanyan accepted
the invitation of his colleague to visit Georgia in the second half
of 2006.
Gela Bezhuashvili expressed satisfaction with the meeting. "We keep
building a very strong house of friendship," the minister said.
Armenia and Georgia have many common tasks and goals. The most
important is to secure an absolutely free direct dialogue at the
level of business, to liquidate the obstacles in the frontier issues,
Minister Bezhuashvili said. He pointed out the growing number of
Armenian tourists resting in the Georgian resorts of Black Sea coast.
He invited Armenians to have a rest in Georgia, the more so as
additional hotels are built in that country. Besides, the minister
stressed development of winter sports in Georgia.
To note, it is the first visit of Gela Bezhuashvili to Armenia as the
Foreign Minister of Georgia.
