Tbilisi. A protest rally demanding protection of workers' rights has been held in Zestafoni (Imereti region) on the occasion of the World Day for Decent Work, on Tuesday, on 7 October.
Hundreds of workers of Tkibuli mine, Chiatura mine and Zestafoni ferroalloy plant have participated in the rally, organized by the Trade Union of Workers of Metallurgical, Mining and Chemical Industries.
"Despite the fact that the new Labor Code was adopted in 2013, it is hardly possible to implement many of the statutory rights, because there is no labor protection inspection. Establishment of labor protection inspection was one of the key pledges of the new government," said Tamaz Dolaberidze, the Trade Union President.
Trade union insists on the need for "adequate social dialogue," the introduction of the European safety standards, as well as providing employees with decent wages.
Since 2008, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) has been organizing the World Day for Decent Work (WDDW) on 7 October. This is a day for mobilization all over the world. On October 7 - the World Day for Decent Work, unions across the planet will be holding rallies, workplace activities, public actions and a multitude of other events, in support of justice for workers and climate justice. According to the ITUC, this is the day when all the trade unions in the world stand up for decent work. "Decent work must be at the centre of government actions to bring back economic growth and build a new global economy that puts people first," ITUC web-site reads.
