Ameria: 42.3% of Armenia's population prefers doing shopping in supermarkets

The share of supermarkets in the market of food, drinks, cigarettes and household items in Armenia is 39%, of which 30% falls on the Yerevan stores owned by 4 large Armenian retailers. In the meantime, the supermarkets cover the lion's share of the alcohol market in Yerevan (63.1%), the survey of the retail trade market held by Ameria consulting company says.   

The survey demonstrates that the population prefers visiting agricultural markets mostly to buy vegetables and fruits; consequently, the share of the agricultural markets makes up 28% of the retail trade of this group of products. Bread and cigarettes are mostly sold in mini-markets, which ensure 30.3% and 29.7% of sales of the specified goods. 

According to the survey, 42.3% of the country's population prefers doing the daily shopping in the supermarkets. 41% of the buyers visit mini-markets. The other trade outlets by daily attendance are as follows: large food stores, trade stalls, street trade outlets, large appliance shops, trade centers.

"Supermarkets are the key rivals on the country's fast consumption goods market. They have drastically changed the culture and behavior of our consumers. This is good for quality, but this may also result in growing prices," the deputy head of the management consulting service of America Karen Martirosyan said.

The press service of the company reports that the details of the survey will be presented shortly during a roundtable discussion involving representatives of big retail companies, experts and bankers.

Ameria is currently conducting a number of large-scale surveys in different sectors of the economy.
