Marat Terterov: Armenia’s long term security will be better served by strengthening economic security, rather than defining national security on the basis of the Tsarist Russian catch-cry “armiya i flot”
Turkey stands for the closure of Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant in Armenia and conducts active work in this direction, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz said in an interview with TRT Haber TV channel on Tuesday.
"Metsamor NPP and other nuclear power plants which have already expired their period of service pose a threat to the region and the entire world. Therefore, Turkey is taking the necessary steps to stop the operation of Metsamor NPP," Yildiz said.
Earlier, the minister said that Turkey will turn to the IAEA with the requirement to close Metsamor NPP.
Meanwhile, Armenia's Energy and Natural Resources Ministry says that the second unit of Metsamor NPP will be operative until the new unit is built. The safety of the unit is closely controlled by the Armenian authorities and the IEAE and will be constantly improved until the reactor is decommissioned.
