Armenia will access the Eurasian Economic Union within the borders it has been joining the other international structures for the last 20-23 years, President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan said in an interview with the Public Television of Armenia.
This is the right way, he said, and no one can prove the opposite. "Armenia has special relations with, I'd tell you straight, the second Armenian republic - the Nagorno Karabakh Republic. It is wrong casting doubt that Artsakh is an independent state. We have not recognized Artsakh for a range of specific reasons. Other countries did not do that for other reasons. This is the reality. All the other statements are just emotions. Don't protect Artsakh from me! It is insulting and absurd," the president said. As regards the statement by President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, Serzh Sargsyan said the there is no place for emotions in politics and much less in diplomacy. International negotiations are not the best place for 'squabbles.'
"It is necessary to realize that not only Azerbaijan creates tension on the border, but also in the diplomatic arena. It would be surprising if Ilham Aliyev did not send letters to the presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. It would be a surprise for us. We knew about those letters yet on the eve of the Summit. When I said that Nazarbayev's statement was unpleasant for us, I did not mean the content of his statement, I meant the fact the president of a CU member-state refers to the letter of the Azerbaijani president," Serzh Sargsyan said.
To recall, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said on the heels of a Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan, Thursday, that Armenia is ready to sign the Treaty on Eurasian Economic Union before June 15. President of Russia Vladimir Putin said that the document can be signed no sooner than on 1 July, as Armenia is yet to fulfill some commitments. President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, in turn, said Azerbaijan claims that Armenia can join the Eurasian Economic Union (EAU) within the same borders it joined the World Trade Organization (WTO). We have received the Azerbaijani president's letter saying that Armenia joined WTO with a reservation that the provisions must apply to the territory of Armenia within its international borders recognized by the UN. It is an issue for discussion," the Kazakh president said. President of Armenia made no statement in response.
