Swiss Ambassador to Armenia Lukas Gasser: Switzerland will try to contribute to a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict without questioning the established formats such as the OSCE Minsk process
Perhaps, Armenia and the European Union will sign a cooperation document in the format which does not contradict the Customs Union, an expert of the Centre for National and International Studies, political analyst, Edgar Vardanyan, said at today's press-conference.
"The EU has always wanted and still wants to cooperate with Armenia. European functionaries reiterated many times that EurAsEC does not contradict European integration of Armenia, but the Customs Union and DCFTA are incompatibles. For this reason, a new format of cooperation may be found", - he said. He also added that it is obvious that the Association Agreement will not be signed, but Armenia and the EU will try to find the way out from the created situation. He said that by hiding their intention to join the Customs Union, the Armenian authorities have again lost the people's trust. This may cause serious problems, he said.
The expert analyzed statements by the political forces of Armenia and has come to the conclusion that for all the forces, including the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, the decision to join the Customs Union was a surprise. He did not rule out holding of a round table to discuss the issue, in which representatives of the opposition political forces and civil society will also take part. "All the forces have already said about the necessity of consolidation. It means that at present we have got great chances for consolidation ", - the expert concluded.
