Swiss Ambassador to Armenia Lukas Gasser: Switzerland will try to contribute to a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict without questioning the established formats such as the OSCE Minsk process
by David Stepanyan
Four years have passed since signing of the Zurich protocols, but Turkey's position has not changed, director of the "Modus Vivendi" Centre, Ara Papyan, told Arminfo correspondent.
"During the talks in Switzerland Ankara put forward three pre-conditions against Armenia: giving up the demand about international recognition of the Armenian genocide, the recognition of the borders that were fixed in 1921, and resolving of the Karabakh conflict the way Turkey wants. The Turks have managed to fix the first two pre-conditions in the Protocols, as for the third, they failed to do it. And today saying about the "expected compromises" from the side of Yerevan, the Turks still mean all the three their pre-conditions. In such a way Ankara is trying to balance the argument of our authorities, according to which the ball is in the field of Turkey", - the expert emphasized.
He thinks that taking into account the fact that the Armenian-Turkish Protocols were not beneficial to Armenia from the very beginning, the present position of Yerevan is not clear. Having a very good reason for refusal of the Protocols, the Armenian authorities did not do that and have given an opportunity to the Turks to make statements at the top of their voice in all over the world that "the Armenians are not ready to make compromises" and about "the Armenian occupation", he said.
