Armenia vs. Italy final World Cup qualifier at San Paolo Stadium in Naples on Tuesday, October 15, ended in a draw.
Armenia'a Yura Movsisyan scored the first goal, in the fifth minute. The azzurri were back in some 20 minutes. Insigne himself very nearly scored a fantastic goal to put Italy ahead. Armenia regained the lead in the second half, but it no longer mattered. Bulgaria fell to Czech Republic and Denmark beat Malta, but as it turned out, no side from Group B would be headed to the playoffs. The next goal came from Gevorg Ghazaryan, with Mkhitaryan rising to head on. The lead didn't last very long, however. Just six minutes later, Mario Balotelli squared the scoreline once again.
Armenian squad coach Vardan Minasyan said in a post-match press conference that the match was really entertaining and the score was adequate to the general game.
Italian coach Cesare Prandelli said the Italian team started the match very bad, but improved the game short after. Actually, the azzuri were selected to Brazil without any defeats, he said. As a result, Italy got the first place in the Group B with 22 points. Then goes Denmark with 16 and the Czech Republic with 15 points.
Armenia still had a chance of slipping in to Brazil via the playoffs. They are the fifth in Group B, but even on points (13) with the Czech Republic, and both sides just a point behind Bulgaria and Denmark. Malta proved the last in the Group.
