Swiss Ambassador to Armenia Lukas Gasser: Switzerland will try to contribute to a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict without questioning the established formats such as the OSCE Minsk process
The geopolitical situation in the South Caucasus is changing; Armenia has made its choice and it has chosen a different path, wishing to join the Customs Union, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Georgia, Boris Yaroshevich, said at a recent international conference in Tbilisi. He said that the EU will take into account the new reality in the South Caucasus region.
The conference was dedicated to the settlement of conflicts in the Caucasus. It was organized by the South Caucasus Institute of Regional Security and the Caucasus International University with the support of the Swiss and Ukrainian Embassies in Georgia.
Yaroshevich thinks that the foreign political choice of Armenia is changing the geopolitical scene in the region. However, the contacts between the EU and Armenia will be continued, he added. The diplomat pointed out that now the region has two Customs Union partners - Russia and Armenia. At the same time, he was unable to forecast how the new reality may influence the geopolitical situation.
The diplomat also thinks that the initialing of the AA/DCFTA between the EU and Georgia at the upcoming summit in Vilnius will not only outline the direction of the EU-Georgia cooperation for the next 10 years, but also have a big impact on the situation related to the settlement of conflicts. He stressed that the European vector of development will raise the country's image for Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
