Health Minister: Paruyr Hayrikyan to undergo surgery

Paruyr Hayrikyan will undergo surgical operation till the afternoon today. The surgery is needed to remove the shell from the upper right area of the chest.
Derenik Dumanyan, Health Minister of Armenia told media that Hayrikyan's health state is assessed as moderately grave, as no vital organs were damaged. Hayrikyan is able to talk. His life is not in danger.
The assassination attempt against Paruyr Hayrikyan, candidate for president of Armenia, Leader of the Union for National Self-Determination Party, was made in the Tpagrichnery Street in Yerevan overnight. In compliance with the Constitution of Armenia, presidential election is to be postponed for two weeks in case if a candidate faces insurmountable obstacles.
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan assessed the attempt against the candidate for president Paruyr Hayrikyan as a blow on the authorities and the statehood of Armenia.
In the meanwhile, Head of the Armenian Police Department for Public Relations Ashot Aharonyan told ArmInfo that a criminal case was initiated on Article 34-305 of the Criminal Code of Armenia (assassination attempt against a statesman, political figure or public worker in order to stop his activity).
The given Article implies imprisonment for a period of 10-15 years or life sentence. He said that an operative investigation group has been set up comprising the Police and the National Security Service officers. The National Security Service is conducting preliminary investigation.
Besides Hayrikyan, the presidential candidates are as follows: incumbent president Serzh Sargsyan from the Republican Party and former prime minister Hrant Bagratyan from the Liberty Party, Leader of Heritage Party Raffi Hovannisian, Advisor for Political Issues of the Refugees and the International Law Civil Society Network, ex-foreign minister of NKR Arman Melikyan, Leader of National Accord Party Aram Haroutiunyan, political expert Andrias Ghukasyan, and specialist in epic Vardan Sedrakyan. The elections will be held on Feb 18 2013.
