On the occasion of the Armenian Genocide Centennial, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval issued a proclamation, declaring April 19-26 as the Days of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide.
The document urges the US leadership to recognize and condemn the Armenian Genocide, as well as to influence Turkey to face its own history. The killing and forced relocation of the Armenian people that took place in 1915-1923 in the Ottoman Empire claimed the lives of 1.5 million Armenians and forced 500,000 more from their homeland. Many fled to the United States and today Nevada is honored to be home to the large and active Armenian community, the document says.
To note, the State of Vermont also recognized the Armenian Genocide today. 44 out of the 50 US States have recognized the fact of the Armenian Genocide. Despite almost all the US presidents' electoral campaign promises to the Armenian community, Washington is reluctant to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
