Political expert: Reports that the Azeri Parliament might adopt a law "On Occupied Territories of Azerbaijan" were just an attempt to see the reaction of the Azeri society, Armenia and the world community
Marat Terterov: Armenia’s long term security will be better served by strengthening economic security, rather than defining national security on the basis of the Tsarist Russian catch-cry “armiya i flot”
The intention of the Russian "Gasprom" to officially increase natural gas tariff for Armenia at $240 per 1sq/m of gas instead of the former $180, starting April 2013, forced Armenia's energy workers to start revising an application to the Public Services Regulatory Commission about raising of the tariffs for electric power for the final consumers of the republic.
In particular, according to the trustworthy source, the electric power tariff may grow up to 35 drams per 1kWt/h instead of the present 30 drams. It is expected that new tariffs for gas and electric power will be used after 1 April, that is to say, in two months after the presidential election.
When commenting on such possibility, chairman of Armenia's Republican Union of Employers, Gagik Makaryan, recalled that more electric power is generated in Armenia than used. "It is not clear, what is the reason of growth of the electric power tariff, as at present electric power industry enterprises have been working with 18-20% profit", - he said and added that possible growth of tariff for electric power will have a
purpose to balance electric power and gas consumption, as today using of gas is more expensive than electric power. "Growth of electric power tariff will result in raising of the prime cost by 5-10% in such branches like confectionery products and canned goods. Perhaps, some producers will not increase prices for their products thanks to certain reduction of profit", - Makaryan said.
At present, a family with average earnings uses electric power for 20-30 thsd drams per month during the winter season, but ifthe tariff grows by 5 drams, it will promote the growth of the poverty level in the country, he said.
