Security Council Secretary: European Parliament's resolution on Safarov in harmony with Armenia's stance

 Resolution of the European Parliament on Ramil Safarov's case shows that the world community's stance on the given case is in harmony with Armenia's stance, Arthur Baghdasaryan, Secretary of the National Security Council of Armenia, Leader of Orinats Yerkir Party, told media, on September 14.   

"European Parliament heard 15 official statements on Safarov's case. A number of high-ranking officials expressed concern that the given incident may lead to new aggressions against Armenians," Baghdasaryan said. The situation around extradition and pardon of Safarov has become a topic for discussion at one of the latest sessions of the Security Council. As a result, a decision was adopted suspend diplomatic relations with Hungary, he recalled.

The last session of the Security Council was dedicated to the upcoming CSTO CRRF exercises in Armenia.  The Council declared that Armenia is ready to conduct the upcoming large-scale exercises. Baghdasaryan said that the issues related to the national strategy on protection of human rights in Armenia were also discussed at the session.

Earlier on September 13 the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning extradition of Ramil Safarov from Hungary and his pardoning in Baku. Safarov murdered Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan with an axe in Budapest in 2004. Statements harshly criticizing the incident were made at the European Parliament. Particularly, President Ilham Aliyev was characterized as a mafia boss who supports his killer- servant. The participants in the discussions touched upon the Karabakh conflict and the gross violation of the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons. The document says that extradition and pardoning of Safarov leads to escalation of tensions in the region.
