Tbilisi. Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili has
delegated the one- use right to sign an Association Agreement to the Prime
Minister, President's Parliamentary Secretary Davit Pertaia has said at a press
conference today, InterPressNews agency reports.
According to him, under the Constitution,
the authority to sign an agreement belongs to the President.
"As
you know the Association Agreement with the EU should be concluded on June 27.
This agreement is of extreme importance
for our country. Pursuant to the Constitution, the right to sign a
comprehensive agreement belongs to the President. The government decided that
the Prime Minister would sign the agreement so that no questions are raised
about the legitimacy of the signing authority today or, which is especially
important, in the future. The President decided to delegate the one-use
authority to the Prime Minister," said Pataraia.
According to him, pursuant to Articles 11 and 13 of the Law on
International Agreements, the President makes a decision on signing this
agreement, which needs to be countersigned by the Prime Minister. "Accordingly, we inform you that today
we will send the President's order to the government, according to which the
President assigns the authority to sign the Association Agreement to the Prime
Minister. We hope that constitutional procedure on an agreement between the
government and the President will be completed in the coming days," said Pataraia. Georgia will sign the Association Agreement
in Brussels on 27 June 2014.
