The decision to raise the maximum admissible level of water release from Lake Sevan will have a negative effect on the lake's ecosystem, Director of the Ichthyology and Hydroecology Institute Evelina Ghukasyan said in an interview to ArmInfo.
The key motive for the Government to decide to raise the maximum admissible level of water release from Sevan from 170mln c m to 240mln c m in the next five years was the need to overcome water shortages in Ararat Valley.
"You can't solve one environmental problem by creating another one. The shortages in Ararat Valley have been caused by poor management. So, those guilty must first be punished," the expert said.
To remind, following the Government's decision a number of NGOs and residents of Geghakunik, Ararat and Aragatsotn regions launched a campaign to save Sevan.
