Marat Terterov: Armenia’s long term security will be better served by strengthening economic security, rather than defining national security on the basis of the Tsarist Russian catch-cry “armiya i flot”
For Raffi Hovannisian's victory the public needs to consolidate and announce civil disobedience to the authorities, candidate for president Andreas Ghoukassyan said at the ongoing rally in the Liberty Square.
"The current Armenia is not the very country the Karabakh Movement participants dreamed about when gathering in the given square 25 years ago. Today's rally obliges the politicians on the tribune to go ahead the way they have chosen and achieve victory even at the expense of their lives," he said. Ghoukassyan said that much depends also on the public that has gathered in the Liberty Square as it opposes the current situation.
"These fake election became a reason for public consolidation. I have come here to congratulate Raffi Hovannisian. He did something that the opposition could not do over the past years. It is not a victory yet, but the first step. We can win when the government cancels the preliminary result of the election," he said.
The preliminary data of the Feb 18 presidential election aroused high public response in the country. To recall, Raffi Hovannisian received 36.75% of votes and lost the Feb 18 presidential election to the incumbent president Serzh Sargsyan who received 58.64% of votes. Since February 19 Hovannisian has been organizing rallies in the Liberty Square. Unlike the previous ones, this rally has not been sanctioned. It is noteworthy that Head of ARFD Faction, representative of the ARFD Supreme Body Armen Rustamyan, joined the rally. Andreas Ghoukassyan, candidate for president, is also present at the rally.
