Tbilisi. During a visit to Georgia, Foreign Minister of
Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, met President of the country Giorgi
Margvelashvili and Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili.
Margvelashvili- Steinmeier meeting was
held late on Monday evening. Signing of
the Moscow- Sokhumi treaty, envisaging joint troops formation, was in the focus
at the meeting.
"Georgian-German relations have never
been so good as they are now. I
discussed with the President a situation in Georgia on the background of the treaty between Russia and Abkhazia. I
told the President that we would never recognize this document. Besides, we had
a long talk about the situation in
Ukraine. A political settlement of the crisis is required, though we are too
far from it", Steinmeier said after the meeting.
Margvelashvili noted that cooperation with
Germany was deepening and strengthening and it was of special significance for
Georgia's European integration
"Germany assists Georgia in its
integration to Europe. Of course, a security issue is very important this year
- there are complications in Ukraine and Abkhazia, and , possible, in South Ossetia. In 2014 the abovementioned
issues were pressing and I hope, in 2015 they will be settled peacefully with
the international community's active participation", Margvelashvili
noted.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister of Georgia,
will meet with the head of the German diplomacy. Steinmeier advanced the initiative to hold
the Georgian-German business-forum in Germany. According to him, the forum will
promote establishment of contacts between businessmen and invest additional
funds.
Gharibashvili noted Germany's role in the
process of Georgia's economic development.
