Today, on September 2, the Nagorno- Karabakh Republic (NKR) and Armenians worldwide mark the 22nd anniversary of proclamation of the NKR.
On September 2, 1991, the joint session of the Nagorno Karabakh regional council and the Council of People's Deputies of Shahumyan region proclaimed the Nagorno Karabakh Republic (the Artsakh Republic). On 6 January 1992 the NKR Parliament adopted the Declaration on State Independence of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.
On 10 December 1991, just a few days prior to the official collapse of the Soviet Union, Karabakh held a referendum in the presence of international observers. The overwhelming majority of the population (99.89% or 108615 people) voted for Karabakh's full independence from Azerbaijan. The NKR Parliament was elected on December 28.
On September 2, Artsakh and Armenians worldwide hold festive events dedicated to the NKR's Independence Day.
