The party that singles out only one of the Helsinki Principles in the Karabakh peace process threatens the regional security, and, obviously, it is not the Armenian party, Vice Speaker of Armenian Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov has told ArmInfo when commenting on Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov's statement that the main threat to peace in the region is the presence of Armenian troops in the allegedly Azeri territories.
"If we speak of occupation, it is Azerbaijan that occupied the Armenian territories. The matter concerns Getashen, Martunashen and Shahumyan", he says. As regards Mammadyarov's references to the UN Security Council's resolutions on the Karabakh conflict, Sharmazanov recalls that the resolutions were adopted in the early 1990s and aimed to establish ceasefire between the parties. "It is inexpedient to make references to the UN Security Council's resolutions in the current phase of the conflict settlement process. Now the Karabakh conflict is to be resolved on the basis of the Helsiniki Principles and singling out only one of these principles is unacceptable. The international community also thinks so", he says.
To note, during the Dec 5 meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council, Azeri FM Elmar Mammadyarov said that Azerbaijan advocates the Karabakh conflict settlement on the basis of the UN Security Council's 4 resolutions. He said that the main threat to peace in the region is the presence of Armenian troops in "Azerbaijan's territory". He added that demilitarization of the conflict zone will allow strengthening the mutual confidence and reducing the tension in the region.
