Ministry of Culture has refuted the reports that the covered market of Yerevan will be up to 4 stories high. Such reports were disseminated after the market's arch roof was partially demolished a few days ago. Haykakan Zhamanak Daily wrote that the roof was demolished, as it could not bear additional stories.
"The construction company did not submit the project of additional stories to the Ministry of Culture," Gayane Durgaryan, Head of the Public Relations Office, told ArmInfo. She said that after capital repair, the exterior of the covered market will be preserved. However, she said, new solutions will be applied during the repair. In particular, the entrance will be adjusted to the disabled people.
As regards liquidation of the market door which is its best decoration and even the landmark, Durgaryan said that already today Head of the Yerevan Territorial Department of the Agency for Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments Karo Ayvazyan will visit the place where the door was moved to. To recall, bas-reliefs similar to those on the altar of the Makaravank Monastery of the 10th-13th centuries are engraved on the door.
Late in the evening on May 27 the arch roof of the Yerevan covered market was demolished. Yerevan Municipality responded to the situation late in the evening on May 28 i.e. Mayor Taron Margaryan posted a statement on his Facebook page saying that the Municipality has not provided any permit for construction on the covered market. "To fortify the building constructions and to avoid accidents and breakdowns the economic entity initiated relevant measures."
A joint commission was set up by the Yerevan Municipality and Culture Ministry to study the situation and make a resolution. The Municipality and the Culture Ministry will study the expediency of applying to the law-enforcement bodies against the developed company on the basis of the commission's resolution.
